Chilliwack
Get away from the bustle of the big city! Only an hour's drive from Vancouver, Chilliwack offers a quiet escape into Mighty Fraser Country while maintaining its proximity to the comforts of a major centre. With the rugged peaks of the Cascade Mountains overlooking the city, and an intricate river and lake system including the raging Thompson and Fraser Rivers and spectacular Cultus Lake, Chilliwack offers a bounty of hiking, trekking, rock climbing, rafting, and even paragliding opportunities.
Chilliwack is also the perfect "home base" for day trips in the area. Drive 25 minutes north for a relaxing soak in the mineral-rich Harrison Hot Springs, or discover the beauty of Bridal Falls, about 20 km (12 mi.) northeast of town. The sixth highest waterfall in Canada, Bridal Falls, named for its filmy, white appearance, tumbles 122 m (400 ft.) before billowing into the creek below. Meanwhile, Minter Gardens in nearby Rosedale, promises spectacular world-class floral displays from April straight through to October. Located at the base of 2,134-m (7,000-ft.) Mount Cheam, this peaceful garden sanctuary delights all who visit with an explosion of colour, an evergreen maze, and a collection of whimsical flower "sculptures" shaped like Southern Belles and radiant peacocks. With the breathtaking attractions of Chilliwack, why go anywhere else?
Chilliwack is located 100 km (62 mi.) east of Vancouver on the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1), and is readily accessible by bus. Although local air service is available for charters and private planes, passengers arriving on national airlines should fly into Abbotsford, 32 km (20 mi.) southwest of town, or Vancouver.
