Nestled in the Bulkley Valley, surrounded in the majesty of the Babine Mountains in the east and Hudson Bay Mountain in the west, Smithers presents a smorgasbord of year-round sights and activities, living up to its image as "A Town for All Seasons." Breathe in the fresh mountain air as you bike or hike through the many trails in the area. The Babine Mountains Recreation Area boasts 32,000 hectares (79,040 acres) of hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails through sweet-smelling sub-alpine meadows, over rugged peaks, and past crystal glacier-fed lakes. At the west end of the Recreation Area, explore the fossil beds of Driftwood Canyon Provincial Park. A variety of plant and insect fossils dating back over 10 million years – when the area was at the bottom of a lake – offer exciting geological reminders of pre-historic times. In order to preserve these findings for others to see, exploration is encouraged, but collection is prohibited.

Nearby Hudson Bay Mountain also offers a variety of exciting adventures. In the winter, an 18-run ski-hill attracts skiers and snowboarders of all skill-levels, while in the summer, interpretive trails beckon hikers and those just wanting to get out and stretch their legs. The Twin Falls waterfalls formed by a glacier gulch- a narrow, 2-km-long crevice carved into the side of the mountain by the Kathlyn Glacier during the last ice age- are a popular stop. Enjoy the 20-minute walk from the parking lot to the misty base of the falls, or challenge yourself with a steep three-hour hike to the top for a great view of the gulch.
